Newbie-Do #2: Over Open Sights

If you've never played Advanced Squad Leader before, or if you are just getting started, you're going to like this episode. Today we do a thorough play-by-play of a starter kit scenario, taking you through each move and its applicable rule so you can setup and follow along. We discuss the strategy (or lack thereof!) and outcome of each move in each phase.

For this installment of Newbie-do, we turn to Starter Kit 2's scenario, "Over Open Sights" (S12), the first scenario in the set to use GUNS. Jeff takes the American side against the Germans played by our guest, Mike Lembke, and Dave acts as neutral commentator and referee. Our complete setup is listed in the table below. You'll want to have board X, American and German orders of battle and the Starter Kit 2 rules handy.

ASL Starter Kit 2 is available (as of this writing) at the Multiman Publishing web site or through Amazon (see below). Alternatively, you could setup with VASL.

Are there supposed to be two 4-6-7 E German squads?

I had listed a 4-6-7 E in F10, but have now corrected it to 4-4-7 E. Thanks for catching that error.

doesn't board X have grain on it? the opening stack moving into G10 into G8 (grain) isn't open ground and then the first D1F as a FG from x6 and x7 at FF8 would have had hindrances for grain unless of course ASLSK doesn't have grain or hindrances...just checking...thanks

same with the ART shot in turn 1 at J10 the LOS went thru grain...that would have added hindrance to the ITT TH roll

Board X does indeed have grain on it, but because "Over Open Sights" takes place in December the grain is not in season and thus has no effect.

Snowmen and snow forts, on the other hand, ARE in season and provide very good cover, but MMP et al have elected to ignore this factor in the rules.

Thanks for listening and thanks for writing!

your MTR shot in PFPh1b you halved the caliber size of the MTR and not the FP...with Area Fire on the IFT isn't it the FP that is halved and not the caliber size of the MTR? You played it with with a 2FP instead of a 4FP, which is I believe the correct way to play it, you halve the FP not the caliber size of the MTR, right? and then on the CH it would have doubled the FULL effect according to c3.71 which would have made it a 16FP , right?

Hey guys,

...just a nudge to keep up the good work. I'm a listener from Canada, in central Ontario. Nice to hear some good banter about the game and I enjoy your 'celebrity' interviews, particularly Chas Argent, since he's the man right now for ASL publications. John Hill was a coup too but I was a little disappointed to hear that he is not a die-hard ASLer. Keep up the good work struggling with foreign words...'raison d'ĂȘtre' was a zinger this past week (I'm a language teacher)....oh, and I enjoy painting as well so I found the box art critiques something fresh and new to say about ASL. Good thinking!
I'm mainly on VASL as there are no local players that I can get together with regularly.
I've been in SL/ASL since 1982!
I hate vehicular freeze....

Would have been nice to see a pic after each player turn

Yes, pictures would be nice. We'll either go back and take some, or recreate the positions in VASL. Be on the lookout. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm tackling SK2 right now. This podcast was invaluable to my understanding of how artillery works. Thanks!

During Defensive Fire in German turn 2, the 155 Gun (marked with First Fire) could not have Intensive Fired at the German stack in the woods as there were closer German units.

During Advancing Fire in German turn 2, the MMG could not fire since it moved.
