Episode 224: Bupkiss (Bubkes?)

Scenario SV8  Mud and Blood
Lots of letters get us off on the right foot on this show. You can always rely on the listeners to provide some great material. Tournament announcements, commendations, questions and answers (although not very good ones, from us). What's in the Box? examines the Polish and Romanian counters from Broken Ground Design and...wait for it....the new contest!  BING, BING, BING, simply get on Twitter if you can, Tweet at #T2HSPoles state that you would like the Polish counters and you will be entered in the contest.  We realize there could be some complications with this method including the fact that if you are not on Twitter you will hate us, but we will just have to figure it out as we go. Contest ends July 31st.  What we have played lately is SV8 Mud and Blood, FrF97 Wrecking the Rentals, and ASL111 Balkan Sideshow.

  1. Dave! Congratulations on your retirement! Hopefully Jeff will find that he has a long, lost great uncle that leaves him a fortune, so you'll both have plenty of time for ASL, the podcasts, and traveling to places like Singapore!

Oh, Jeff, since you're into watching classic movies, my favorite is the 1934 Scarlet Pimpernel, based on the book by Baroness Orczy. I believe the story is the precursor to characters like Zoro, Batman, etc.: a dashing hero, donning a disguise, to save people, while acting a fool in his real life, to divert attention from his secret life. I think it's a far better movie than any of the remakes, even though it's 85 years old!

As for the movie, Merle Oberon has to be one of the all time most beautiful actresses and Leslie Howard one of my favorite actors- and he ties into WW2, having been killed when his plane was shot down by the Germans. Raymond Massey and Nigel Bruce are a couple of other great actors in the film.

  2. Dave, congrats on your retirement! Enjoy this next phase of your life! Just a quick note about Hondo. Hondo was originally made in 3D. That may be the reason for the red neckerchief against an otherwise brown costume for John Wayne. I've never seen it in 3D, but if you watch closely you'll see a couple cheesy moves with spear and knife thrusts, which clearly were intended to jump out a the audience. James Arness is also in the movie.

  3. Note that Leslie Howard also starred and directed in the fairly historical docu-drama "Spitfire" (1942), another WW2 tie-in, and well worth checking out if you haven't seen it. Oddly, this seems to have been missed in Wikipedia's "Complete filmography" that I just checked out.

  4. I enjoyed your review of BGD counters, as always. As for AFV names, they also appear on the Wreck side.

The Romanians have +1 Broken Morale when facing Hungarians, as do Hungarians when facing Romanians or when fighting in Hungary.
